How To Deal With Stress

As humans, we all experience stress. Whether it’s about your hair for a party or studying for an exam, we all, especially teenagers, experience it. Stress is our automatic reaction to a situation where we feel threatened or anxious.

But how do we deal with stress? Though it’s an easy question, many struggle to answer it.

To help you answer this question, I have created an answer. Today I will be discussing how to deal with stress, specifically as a teenager. I hope you enjoy!

Take Care Of Yourself:

When it comes to stress, taking care of your mental health is a top priority. By doing something you love like a hobby, taking a bubble bath, having a treat or watching netflix, you can reduce your stress. It’s the little things that count.

Talk About It:

If you are ever feeling stressed or overwhelmed, do not hesitate to talk to someone about it. Confide in someone trustworthy like a parent, a close friend, a teacher or a pet.

Take A Break:

Whenever you feel overwhelmed or like you cannot juggle everything, take a break. I know it’s hard to try to sit back and relax with all those tasks just sitting there, but I assure you it helps. Take a night off working to focus on yourself. This prevents burnout and keeps you motivated in the long run.

Avoid Caffeine:

For all you coffee lovers out there, if stress is often a struggle, consider cutting down on the caffeine. This will allow better focus and better sleeping.

Get More Sleep:

No wonder you’re stressed if you’re staying up until 2am every night. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night (ideally 10) to sharpen your memory, focus and alertness. Sleeping also lowers your stress levels overall.

Write A Diary:

Acknowledging and writing down the stressful aspects of your life is extremely beneficial for lowering stress levels. I call it a stress diary. Whenever you are stressed or angry, write it all down to release your stress into the words on the page.

Stay Active:

Staying active is a great way to relieve stress. Staying active pumps up your endorphins, also known as your brains feel-good neurotransmitters. It benefits your sense of well-being, your overall health and your day.

Eat Healthy:

By eating healthy, I mean eating nutritious and delicious food that does not cause or affect stress in a negative way. When feeling stressed, avoid food with lots of sugar, that are high in carbohydrates and that are processed heavily.

Manage Your Time:

To stop your to-do list from becoming over crowded with unnecessary work, try to work on managing your time better. This includes making sure you don’t over-commit yourself to others or extra work, learning to prioritize particular tasks, breaking large projects into step by step plans and splitting responsibilities between yourself and others.

Say No:

Learning to say No is a great way to cut down on stress. Rather than worrying about all the extra things you need to do or places you need to go, say no, and the problem goes away. As a teen, it can be really hard because of FOMO (the fear of missing out) but I can assure it takes so much off of your plate.

Stay Positive:

Positivity is a great way to manage your stress. Positive self-talk is a way to turn any negative thoughts into thoughts of positivity and improvement. For example, you could turn phrases like β€˜I can’t do this’ into β€˜I’ll do the best i can. I got this!’

Be Assertive:

Stress can also affect your social life, making you more irritable or angry. By turning anger into assertiveness, you prevent unnecessary fights caused by becoming angry, defensive or passive.

Try Relaxation Techniques:

Relaxation techniques are proven to be extremely effective when it comes to lowering stress. Some examples of relaxation techniques to try at home include meditation, yoga or tai-chi.

Talk To A Professional:

If stress is affecting your life crucially, talk to your parents about considering seeing a professional about it. Though it can be difficult to talk to your parents about it, feeling free of stress is much more important.

The Bottom Line:

As teenagers, stress often makes up large parts of our life. With school, work and so many commitments, it can be hard to avoid it. However, by having patience and using the strategies listed above, you can reduce your stress and boost your happiness overall.
